Why Volunteer

Are you looking for a way to make a difference? Volunteering is a great way to engage in the community, meet people, and learn new things. Volunteers are also critical to The Center for African American Health’s success. Many of our volunteers have had such a positive experience, they have stayed with us for years—becoming deeply involved in the work and success of our programs!

Volunteer Opportunities

Wisdom Friends Volunteer
Wisdom Friends is a virtual volunteer opportunity that can be fulfilled from the comfort and safety of your own home! Each volunteer will be paired with a senior in our community who is facing challenges leaving their home and would like to engage in warm, friendly conversations on a weekly basis. Conversations will be scheduled between the volunteer and their assigned senior and can take place either over the phone or via video chat, depending on the preferences of both parties. Wisdom Friends Volunteers are expected to participate in at least one scheduled conversation with their assigned senior per week, with conversations typically ranging from 20 minutes to one hour in length. All volunteers must complete a background check and are asked to commit for a minimum of three months.

Faith & Health Liaison
Are you a member of a local church or faith community? Help to connect your community to the free programs, events, and services offered by CAA Health by becoming a Faith & Health Liaison. Our Faith & Health Liaisons work with CAA Health staff to coordinate the routine delivery of culturally appropriate health education and free health screenings, as well as to encourage increased physical activity and healthy eating habits among community members. Faith & Health Liaisons benefit from ongoing training about health issues and health resources and receive assistance from CAA Health staff in organizing health-related programming for their communities. Programs are developed to reflect the unique spiritual beliefs and practices of diverse faith communities, with the goals of health promotion and disease prevention. All Faith & Health Liaisons must complete a background check and have the expressed support of their pastor or faith community leader.

Special Event Volunteer
We need volunteers to work at special events, such as our Annual Collaborative Health Fair in March and our Destination Health event held annually in late July*. Special Event Volunteers are needed to help with setting-up for an event, greeting and registering attendees during the event, and tearing-down after the event is over. Special Event Volunteers are crucial to ensuring that our community events are a success!
*Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Destination Health has been cancelled for 2020. We hope to offer this event again next summer.

Medical Professional Volunteer
Are you a medical professional? We need physicians, dentists, nurses, dieticians, and others with medical experience to help provide free health screenings and give talks on health care topics. If you have these skills and would be willing to offer your time and talents in service to our community, please let us know, and we will add your name to a list of individuals to contact as needs arise.
